Teachers Registration Fees

Information Guidelines

The Teachers Registration Board is an Independent Statutory Authority funded solely through the collection of registration fees. There is no government or any other external financial support.

Registration is for a three year period paid in advance. Financial planning is done on a three year basis.

For historical reasons the number of teachers renewing their registration varies significantly over the three year triennium. Over half of all registered teachers are due to renew their registration before 31 January 2006. Income collected in the peak year must partially fund the Board’s operations over the next two years.

Prior to the proclamation of the new Act registration fees had not been increased since 2001.

The Teachers Registration and Standards Act 2004 proclaimed on 31 March 2005 significantly strengthens the powers, functions and responsibilities of the Board bringing it in line with other teacher regulatory authorities in Australia and New Zealand. Child Protection and promoting the teaching profession and professional standards for teachers are the cornerstones of the legislation.

To administer the provisions of the Act for the regulation of the teaching profession an increase in registration fees was approved by Parliament effective from 31 March 2005. All fees associated with registration are published in the Teachers Registration and Standards Regulations 2005.

The fee for a three year period paid in advance is $180, ie the equivalent of $60 per year. Even with this increase the cost of teacher registration fees is either comparable to other teacher regulatory authorities or considered minimal compared with fees from other professional and licensing authorities.

As at 30 September 2005 annual teacher registration fees to renew in other states are
