ENGLISH LANGUAGE TESTS

The Teachers Registration Board currently recognises three English language testing systems:

The International English Language Testing System [IELTS]

IELTS provides a profile of ability to use English.

The Teachers Registration Board only accepts the Academic Module and not the General training module, and a minimum score of 7 for each of the modules, i.e. for Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

IELTS Academic module provides an assessment of whether candidates are ready to study or train in the medium of English, at undergraduate or postgraduate level.

IELTS test centres operate in 105 different countries. All candidates are tested in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking Modules. There is no specific test relating to teaching.

Results for the test are in terms of a band score for each individual module, ranging from 1 (non-User) to 9 (Expert User). The Board requires the applicant to achieve a minimum score of 7 (Good User, has operational command of the language and generally handles complex language well and understands detailed reasoning), for each of the modules, i.e. for Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The Board does, not accept the overall band score where individual module scores are added and averaged.

The International Second Language Proficiency Ratings [ISLPR]

Formerly the Australian Second Language Proficiency Ratings.

ISLPR is a proficiency scale for the macroskills of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Test results are reported as a level from 0 (Zero Proficiency) to 5 (Native-Like Proficiency).

The Teachers Registration Board will only accept a minimum score of 4 in each of the macroskills of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

A score of 4 means Vocational Proficiency - can use the English fluently and accurately on all levels - personal, social, and in situations pertinent to their own ‘vocational’ fields.

The Professional English Assessment for Teachers [PEAT]

PEAT is an assessment of English language skills within an educational context. It is designed to determine whether a candidate’s English proficiency is of a standard which would enable the candidate to teach and interact effectively and confidently in a school setting.

PEAT is the property of the New South Wales Department of School Education and is administered by The Institute of Languages, The University of New South Wales.

PEAT consists of four components: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Test results for each of the four skill areas are given in terms of Bands A, B, C   or D.

The Teachers Registration Board will only accept a test result of Band A in all four components of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

Band A means the candidate can, for Listening, comprehend easily and accurately in all personal and professional contexts; for Reading, are able to read all styles and forms of the language pertinent to their professional needs; for Writing, are able to write fluently and accurately on all levels normally pertinent to their personal or professional needs; and for Speaking, are able to use language fluently and accurately on all levels normally pertinent to their personal, social, academic or professional needs.

PLEASE NOTE:      The Board will accept an applicant who has taken discrete components of the same test after not achieving the desired score in all four components of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking in the initial test.

Any rating from IELTS, ISLPR and PEAT is valid for up to 2 years from the date of the initial test.
