National Criminal History Record Checks
Am I able to obtain a copy of my criminal record check conducted by the Teachers Registration Board?
A criminal record check is conducted pursuant to Section 22 of the Teachers Registration and Standards Act 2004. Data is forwarded and received electronically.
If evidence is required that a criminal record check has been conducted, your Certificate of Registration states the date of the most recent criminal record check.
I am renewing my registration. I had a check done in 2005, why do I need another check done?
The Teachers Registration and Standards Act 2004 (the Act) provided the Minister for Education and Children’s Services with a once only provision to direct criminal record checks. The Board was directed to conduct checks on all registered teachers after the proclamation of the Act, 31 March 2005.
Pursuant to Section 22 (2) (a) of the Act an applicant for registration (including renewal) must consent to the conduct by the Board of a criminal record check relating to the applicant. Therefore, when renewing your registration you will be required to consent to the conduct by the Teachers Registration Board of a criminal record check and pay the required fee.
I have recently had a criminal history check done for another purpose. Can I send that in?
The requirement for applicants to consent to the conduct by the Teachers Registration Board of a criminal record check relating to the applicant is contained within S22(2)(a) of the Teachers Registration and Standards Act 2004. The Criminal Record Check must be conducted by the Board, in line with legislative requirements.
Qualifications
I have a teaching qualification obtained overseas – how do I gain teacher registration in South Australia?
The first step is to complete an Application for Assessment of Qualifications form. If your qualifications are assessed as meeting the current requirements, you are eligible to apply for registration as a teacher. An Application for Registration form will be forwarded to you.
I have already had my qualifications assessed for immigration purposes – does the TRB need to assess them again?
Yes, the Board needs to perform an independent assessment of your overseas qualifications to determine whether your qualifications meet the prescribed requirements for registration as a teacher.
I don’t have an academic transcript. Can I just send you my graduation parchment?
No, the Board needs to see an academic transcript for each of your qualifications. If you do not have one, you need to contact the University that awarded the qualification and obtain a copy of your transcript.
I don’t have evidence of the duration of my supervised teaching practice, but I have worked as a teacher. Can I just send my teaching references?
In order for the Board to recognise your teaching qualifications, we must see evidence of the duration of your supervised teaching practice. If you do not have this already, you will need to obtain written information from the University that awarded your teaching qualification confirming the duration of your supervised teaching practice.
I do not have a teaching reference from my most recent employer. Does that matter?
If you do not have a teaching reference, you should try to obtain one. If your employer cannot provide a reference, please ask your employer to state this in writing and submit this with your application.
Mandatory Notification Training
I thought I had to get my Mandatory Notification Attendance Certificate(s) for renewal of my registration, certified by a Justice of the Peace. Is this true?
It is not necessary to have copies of your Mandatory Notification Certificates certified by a Justice of The Peace for renewal of registration, however certified copies are acceptable. Verified copies are also acceptable. Copies of your certificate(s) can be verified by any person who has known you for a period of at least twelve months and is listed in the Acceptable Referees categories.
When verifying copies of your Mandatory Notification Certificate(s), the Acceptable Referee should print their name and title, then sign and date the front of each Mandatory Notification Certificate and write the following endorsement:
"This is a true and correct copy of the original document."
I have my certificate(s) for my Mandatory Notification Training updates since 2006. Is this acceptable?
An update course is acceptable only if you have a certificate for an approved full day - 7 hour - training course completed at some time. A three hour update course without the additional full day training does not meet the Board's requirements.
Why do all teachers need to do Mandatory Notification Training? I do not currently work in a school so why can’t I do it once I go back to teaching?
There are many registered teachers who do not work in preschools and schools. The requirement to do Mandatory Notification Training is not connected to your employment status. It is a condition of registration. All teachers have legislated responsibilities as mandated notifiers, pursuant to section 11 of the Children’s Protection Act 1993 and the Children’s Protection (Miscellaneous) Amendment Bill 2005, assented to on 8 December 2005.
The Teachers Registration and Standards Act 2004 and the Teachers Registration and Standards Regulations 2005 require proof of Mandatory Notification Training for Registration.
Where can I go to do a Mandatory Notification Training Course?
There is a link to Child Safe Environments - one day course providers in the Mandatory Notification section. You need to contact a provider to book into a course.
I have done the Child Protection Training “Keeping Safe”. Is this Mandatory Notification Training?
