Pursuant to Part 5 of the Teachers Registration & Standards Act 2004, Section 24(1) the Teachers Registration Board may impose conditions of registration, restricting the subjects that a person may teach.
TEACHING A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT OR A CATEGORY OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS IN SCHOOLS OR PRE-SCHOOLS
The Board’s policy enables instrumental music teachers who do not hold teacher registration, to teach in a school or pre-school in the specialised subject area of a specified musical instrument, for example piano, violin, guitar, vocal teaching, saxophone, recorder, flute, music technology, or category of musical instruments, for example keyboard instruments, or stringed instruments, or woodwind instruments, or percussion instruments.
This category of registration does not enable the applicant to teach any other subject.
An application under this policy is granted in the category of Registration With Conditions: Restricted To Teaching a Musical Instrument Or A Category Of Musical Instruments In Schools Or Pre-Schools.
The minimum requirements for the granting of registration are :-
- A major study in the instrument to be taught as part of an approved music degree, diploma or equivalent qualification awarded on satisfactory completion of a tertiary course of study that is of at least three years full-time duration or part-time equivalent, and
- Evidence of approved studies in music education/teaching/pedagogy.
If approved studies in music education were not undertaken as part of this tertiary qualification, then registration will be granted with the following conditions:- restricted to teaching a musical instrument or category of musical instruments, with a further study condition in music education.
- Evidence of approved studies in music education/teaching/pedagogy would entail approximately one quarter of a full year or at least 135 hours of study at either approved workshops, seminars, summer schools, TAFE or university courses, etc. offered by higher education institutions like universities or TAFE colleges, or professional music organisations like the AMEB, MTA, Orff, Yamaha, Suzuki, AUSTA, ASME, etc.
Registration under this policy is renewable every three years:-
If there is a further study condition in music education attached to the registration, then evidence must be submitted of the completion of approved studies in music education, as defined above, before renewal of registration.
