MANDATORY NOTIFICATION TRAINING REQUIREMENTS from 1 MARCH 2006

The Teachers Registration and Standards Act 2004 (the Act) and the Teachers Registration and Standards Regulations 2005 (the Regulations), require proof of Mandatory Notification Training for registration.

Mandatory Notification Course means a course of instruction approved by the Teachers Registration Board relating to child abuse and neglect and the requirements under Part 4 Division 1 of the Children’s Protection Act 1993 for notification of suspected child abuse or neglect. The requirement that all applicants for registration or renewal for registration are sufficiently trained in Mandatory Notification is in line with the legislated responsibilities of teachers as mandated notifiers, pursuant to section 11 of the Children’s Protection Act 1993 and the Children’s Protection (Miscellaneous) Amendment Bill 2005, assented to on 8 December 2005.

The Department for Families and Communities, Families SA have the responsibility for the development of appropriate Mandatory Notification Training courses which meet legislative requirements. A full day and update course have been offered for some time. In addition a new course with an education and care focus was developed in 2005 to specifically cater for those in education and care settings. Teachers are encouraged to undertake the Education and Care course as the training is multidisciplinary as well as being tailored to a particular service context.

The Teachers Registration Board has approved the Department for Families and Communities, Families SA full day courses as a minimum requirement for registration. The Board has adopted the following arrangements to phase in legislative requirements.

New applicants must provide :

Final year students – from South Australian Tertiary Institutions must provide :

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR REGISTRATION

From 31 March 2005 the minimum qualification requirement for registration changed to a 4 year approved pre-service teacher education award, or a 3 year non-teacher education award, plus an approved post graduate teacher education award of at least one year duration, or part-time equivalent. Refer Teachers Registration and Standards Regulations 2005, regulation 4 or visit our website www.trb.sa.edu.au .

If you do not hold the minimum qualification requirement and you allow your registration to expire, any further application will be assessed in line with the (new) legislative requirements. Your application would be considered on a case by case basis. The Board could refuse registration or grant registration with a condition. A condition could be that you undertake further tertiary studies.

If you are currently registered and do not hold the Board’s minimum qualification requirements please ensure you renew your registration by the due date.

For further information or enquiries regarding the minimum qualification requirements contact Ms Leela Kwitko, Senior Qualifications Officer by email leelak@trb.sa.edu.au , or telephone 8226 2666.
