Professional standards
Following the proclamation of the Teachers Registration and Standards Act 2004 many teachers were involved in consultations regarding the development of professional standards.
The Professional Standards for Registration in South Australia have been developed for graduate entry and change of registration status from provisional registration to registration.
Professional Standards for renewal of registration will be developed after further consultation with the teaching profession.
The nine teaching standards are articulated under the three Core Principles of Professional Relationships, Professional Knowledge and Professional Practice. Integrity, respect and responsibility, the values that underpin the Standards are fully articulated in the Teachers Registration Board’s Code of Ethics for the Teaching Profession in South Australia.

Example characteristics accompany each standard. Although the characteristics are presented separately, in practice no one standard is applied totally independently of the others. They are interdependent, overlapping and collectively contribute to the achievement of the standards as a whole.
The example characteristics should not be viewed as a competency checklist. They are provided as a starting point to which further examples may be added.
