Mandatory Notification Training Requirements for Renewal
The Department for Families and Communities (Families SA) has the responsibility for the development of approved Mandatory Notification Training courses (e.g. ‘Child Safe Environments – Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect’ or ‘Responding to Abuse and Neglect – Education and Care’) which meet requirements for registration. A requirement for registration is that at some time you must have completed a Families SA approved 7-hour Mandatory Notification Training foundation course and then undertake an approved 3-hour update course during each three year cycle of your registration.
Please note:
- Courses undertaken online are not acceptable for registration purposes.
- Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum training courses are not acceptable for registration purposes
- Some employers, including the Department of Education and Children’s Services, require applicants for employment purposes to have undertaken courses delivered by specific providers (Responding to Abuse and Neglect – Education and Care Training). Please refer to the Mandatory Notification Training Course Providers section below for further information.
To renew your registration, the majority of teachers must have completed an approved 3-hour update Mandatory Notification Training course during the last three year cycle of registration (i.e. from 1 February 2009). Upon completion of the approved 3-hour update course a certificate of attendance is issued. If you have not already forwarded a copy of your certificate of attendance to the Board, you must submit a copy with your Application for Renewal of Registration. To check the date of your last recorded Mandatory Notification Training, please refer to the details on the reminder letter.
A small number of teachers who have been granted registration under Mutual Recognition Agreements have not yet met the approved 7-hour Mandatory Notification Training foundation course requirement. If this applies to you, you must complete an approved 7-hour foundation course and submit a certified copy of the certificate of attendance with your Application for Renewal of Registration.
A number of teachers who have resided interstate or overseas have been granted provisional registration with a condition. These teachers have not yet met the Mandatory Notification Training requirements. If this applies to you, you must complete an approved 7-hour foundation course or 3-hour update course, whichever applies specifically to you.
Residing Interstate or Overseas
A Mandatory Notification Training course can only be undertaken in South Australia. If you are currently residing interstate or overseas and not able to access the course required to renew your registration, you will need to declare this on your Application for Renewal of Registration form. You may be granted provisional registration with the condition that you complete the required training and provide a copy of your certificate of attendance for an approved 7-hour foundation course or approved 3-hour update course (as applicable) to the Board within 3 months of your return to South Australia.
If you have not completed an approved 7-hour foundation course or an approved 3-hour update course (as applicable), please refer to the Mandatory Notification Training Providers section below for further information about providers of approved Mandatory Notification Training courses.
Lost Mandatory Notification Training Certificate
If you have lost your certificate of attendance at a Mandatory Notification Training course you will need to contact the provider of the course and request a copy of your certificate of attendance and then submit a copy to the Board with your Application for Renewal of Registration.
The onus is on you to ensure that you have met the Mandatory Notification Training requirements and the Teachers Registration Board receives proof of course completion by 31 December 2011.
If you are unsure about the Mandatory Notification Training requirements needed to renew your registration please contact the Project Officers, Registration and Standards on (08) 8226 8811 and select 3.
