Australia’s STEM report card

TRB employee and UniSA academic, Debra Panizzon, has recently returned from a conference in the US funded by the National Science Foundation where she presented her paper ‘Australia’s STEM report card’.

Chief amongst her findings is that, despite government complaints that Australian students are ‘failing’ in the Programme for International Student Assessments (PISA) we maintained our status quo when PISA results are compared across 2003-2012. It is only in the last 2015 round of PISA that a drop in overall student achievement is identifiable. Put into perspective, only a small proportion of countries significantly outperform our students in the subjects tested in PISA.
The paper further analyses the PISA data by examining the ‘hard evidence’ that is identifiable around gaps and inconsistencies in student achievement in relation to socioeconomic status, gender, Indigeneity and geographical location.
These same gaps are consistent with the results from both Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and NAPLAN. Importantly, the gaps are not new with various government policies over time attempting to address the gaps albeit with limited degrees of success. However, access to these international and national data sets sheds new light on the actual extent and size of these gaps.
The challenge for our educational professionals is to find ways to address the needs of these groups thereby ensuring greater equity for all Australian students regardless of their cultural background, where they live or their economic status, something that is vital to the future of this country.
