Cambodia volunteer teaching experience

Rebekah Cook, the Director of Teaching and Learning at Southern Vales Christian College spent 10 days working with teachers in the Banteay Meanchey Province of Cambodia during October. Below is a short account of her time.

The Banteay Meanchey Province is an area that was under the regime of Pol Pot right up until 1999 and as a consequence schools are struggling to reach educational goals and outcomes for their children. Teachers have little to no training but are so keen to learn. While we were there, in remote school classrooms, we took the teachers through some basic understanding of child development theories, idea generation strategies, and higher order questioning skills.
Additionally, we worked with principals on topics including critical conversations, strategic planning and STEM approaches. I would like to thank the TRB for their donation of conference bags for each participant. The teachers were excited to open their bags and find books, post-it-notes and even a ruler and pen from the TRB. Your support helped to make this experience significant for the teachers and principals who can often feel very isolated. Thank you. Rebekah Cook
