Mandatory Notification Training

Under the Teachers Registration and Standards Regulations 2021 mandatory notification course means a course of instruction approved by the Teachers Registration Board relating to children and young people at risk and the requirements under Chapter 5 Part 1 of the Children and Young People (Safety) Act 2017 for reporting of suspicion that a child or young person may be at risk.

All teachers in South Australia must undertake appropriate mandatory notification training.

The Department for Education hosts the mandatory notification courses introduced on 1 July 2021. You can access the new courses here.

What kind of MNT do I need to do? I am…

A currently registered teacher renewing my registration

One of the requirements for renewing your registration is completing an appropriate mandatory notification training course(s) within each term of registration.

The free online Fundamentals course (formerly known as an update or refresher course) is available here. Teachers who are due to renew their registration by 31 December 2022 need to complete this course OR have a certificate showing they have completed a RAN update with an expiry date of 31 December 2024.

You can email your online Fundamentals certificate of completion to the Board at any time before your renewal of registration is due. If you include your teacher registration number (6 digits) when accessing the course, the TRB will be advised that you have completed the requirement and the date you did so. Your TRB records will be updated accordingly and you will not need to take any further action.

If you did not include your registration number when accessing the course, please forward the electronic certificate to the Board by emailing it to renewal@trb.sa.edu.au or print and post it to PO Box 3649 Rundle Mall 5000.

If you registered in South Australia under mutual recognition you did not need to complete mandatory notification training before lodging your application for registration.

However, you will need to have completed the mandatory notification training at some time during your first term of registration (up to 3 or shortly to be 5 years) that is:

  • a certified copy of the full day (7hr) training course (if completed online, please forward the email from trainer with your certificate attached) OR
  • a certified copy of the full day training of the Child Safe-Environment – Through their Eyes (previously CSE) completed within the last twelve months OR
  • completed the Responding to Risks of Harm, Abuse and Neglect – Education and Care (RRHAN-EC) training Please note: this will need to include the Online Fundamentals course as well as the Masterclass Workshop. Your certificate will show “Full certification”.

You must lodge a certified copy of the certificate of completion before your renewal is due OR if all training has been completed online please forward the email with the certificate attached from the provider to renewal@trb.sa.edu.au for your records to be updated.

You may have been residing outside of SA at the time that it became a requirement to do mandatory notification training for teacher registration and therefore not completed the then approved full day course. You must complete the current mandatory notification training requirements within 3 months of returning to SA.

As it is now possible to complete the mandatory notification training online, you can undertake the Responding to Risks of Harm, Abuse and Neglect – Education and Care (RRHAN-EC) training Please note: this will need to include the Online Fundamentals course (2 hours) as well as the Masterclass Workshop (4 hours) which is available online or face-to face. Your certificate will show “Full certification”. Once this mandatory notification training has been completed and your certificate provided to the Board the condition on your registration will be removed.
