Mandatory Notification Training

All teachers in South Australia must undertake appropriate Mandatory Notification Training (MNT). Firstly, you must complete a full day (7-hour) face-to-face MNT course with a Department for Child Protection approved trainer to gain registration, and then complete updates to renew your registration.

What kind of MNT do I need to do? I am…

A currently registered teacher renewing my registration

One of the requirements for renewing your registration is completing an appropriate MNT course within each term of registration (up to 3 years in length). You can provide your certificate of completion to the Board at any time before your renewal of registration is due.

There is a free, online refresher course called ‘Responding to Abuse & Neglect: Education and Care Update’ available at the Department for Education for teachers who are due to renew their registration in either 2019 or 2020.

When you have finished the training you can forward the electronic certificate to the Board by emailing it to info@trb.sa.edu.au or printing and posting it.

If you registered in South Australia under mutual recognition you did not need to complete the full day training before lodging your application.

However, you will need to complete an MNT course at some time during your first term of registration (up to 3 years) that is:

  • 7 hours in length (full day)
  • Completed face-to-face in South Australia
  • Facilitated by a Department for Child Protection approved training provider

You must lodge a certified copy of the certificate of completion before your renewal is due.

In past registration cycles the update course for MNT was only available face-to-face, so if you weren’t living in South Australia you wouldn’t have been able to do the required update for previous renewals. As an acceptable update course is now available online, you can meet this requirement even if you are living interstate or overseas.

You may have been living outside of SA at the time that it became a requirement to do MNT for teacher registration and so have not completed the approved full day course. You must complete the full day MNT course within 3 months of returning to SA.

If you are still living interstate or overseas, but would like to maintain your SA registration, you will need to provide a signed letter to the Board at the time of your renewal stating that you have not returned to SA and therefore have not been able to access the MNT to meet the condition on your registration.

A final-year student, or graduate within the last 2 years, of an Australian teaching qualification

With your Application for Teacher Registration you must provide a certified copy of a certificate of completion for a MNT course that is:

  • 7 hours in length (full day)

  • Completed face-to-face in South Australia

  • Facilitated by a Department for Child Protection approved training provider

  • Completed at any time during your studies in the teaching qualification

If you don't already have a certificate that meets these requirements, please see the list of approved providers so you can complete a new course before lodging your application.

We will NOT accept:

  • Update or online courses

  • A full day certificate completed before you started studying your teaching qualification

  • The tertiary student induction course 'Promoting Safety and Wellbeing'

Applying under mutual recognition (registered in another state/territory/NZ)

If you are eligible to apply under Mutual Recognition you are not required to complete MNT before gaining registration in South Australia. However, you will need to complete a 7-hour course at some time during your first term of registration (up to 3 years).

Other (previously registered, overseas trained, Australian trained)

This section applies to all other applicants, including:

  • Previously registered (expired from the register) teachers re-instating their registration
  • Australian-trained teachers who graduated more than 2 years ago
  • Overseas-trained teachers with approved qualifications

With your Application for Teacher Registration you must provide a certified copy of a certificate of completion for a MNT course that is:

  • 7 hours in length (full day)
  • Completed face-to-face in South Australia
  • Facilitated by a Department for Child Protection approved training provider
  • Completed within the 12 months prior to lodging your application

7-Hour MNT Course

The 7-hour MNT course is sometimes called ‘Responding to Abuse & Neglect: Education and Care’ (RAN) or ‘Safe Environments - Through their eyes' (CSE). Some employers prefer the RAN course, but either is acceptable for teacher registration.

The Department for Education maintains a list of approved Training Organisations for the 7-hour Responding to Abuse and Neglect – Education and Care training course. Approved 7-hour courses may also be accessed at sites such as TAFE SA campuses and Department for Education Regional Office locations.

Update MNT Course

MNT content is updated in three-year cycles. There is a free, online refresher course called ‘Responding to Abuse & Neglect: Education and Care Update’ available at the Department for Education for teachers who are due to renew their registration in either 2019 or 2020.
