All registered teachers need to meet the renewal requirements to be eligible for renewal. Emails outlining the renewal requirements for teachers who hold registration are sent out approximately six months prior to your expiry date. If you do not receive an email, please contact the Board at  renewal@trb.sa.edu.au.  You can apply to renew your registration for a five-year period with a full or annual payment option.

You can check your expiry date on your teacher's portal or the public register.

The  Teachers Portal is an invaluable tool for your renewal of registration, and it's easy to sign up for an account. Read our step-by-step guide on how to sign up for a portal account. You can use the portal to update your contact details and access your Application for Renewal of Registration from mid-October.

I hold (full) Registration

If you hold (full) registration, you need to have:

* If you have not undertaken the required days of employment as a registered teacher and you have met all other renewal requirements (including your required Professional Learning) you may be granted (full) registration for a further term of five years with a notation on your Certificate of Teacher Registration,

"100 days employment as a teacher under Part 5 of the Act to be verified".

I hold Provisional Registration

If you hold Provisional registration within your current term of registration, you need to have:

Once you have undertaken 200 days of teaching service within your term of registration you must apply to transition from Provisional to (full) Registration before your renewal due date.

When you are initially granted Provisional Registration, you will be granted up to 5 years of registration. You are required to transition from Provisional to (full) Registration within a 5 year period which may be gained in the first year of your second term.

It is an expectation that all Provisionally Registered teachers will transition to (full) Registration before the completion of 5 years of Provisional Registration.

What if I have not transitioned to (full) Registration?

If you are provisionally registered and have not met the requirements to transition to (full) registration you will need to make a new application for Provisional Registration under an extended transition process.

As part of your application through the Teachers Portal, you will be required to provide a detailed explanation as to why you have not fulfilled the condition of your provisional registration.

In support of your application, you will still need to provide evidence of meeting professional learning requirements, a current Working With Children Check, and Overseas Criminal Record Check/s, if you have resided in any country other than Australia for more than 12 continuous months within your current term of registration.

Under this process you should not expect your application for provisional registration will be approved as a matter of course. The Board will consider the individual merits of each application under the extended transition process to determine whether, or not to grant extra time. The Board will look at your efforts to attain the experience and/or requirements for (full) registration during their five-year term of provisional registration, together with any explanations as to why you have been unable to successfully transition to (full) registration.

In some circumstances, an application will be placed before a sub-committee of the Board for hearing and determination.  In such circumstances, you are entitled to appear before the Board and make submissions.

Should the Board determine to grant you another term of provisional registration, it will be an expressed condition that you acquire the necessary experience and/or requirements to move to (full) registration. The Board may, in its discretion, set further conditions to ensure that this is achieved.

What happens if I don't renew my registration?

If you do not renew your registration before the expiry date you will be removed from the register and you will not be able to be employed as a teacher in South Australia. It is an offence to practice as a teacher without current teacher registration.

Should you wish to return to teaching after your registration expires, you will need to lodge a new Application for Teacher Registration form including all supporting documentation.

If your qualifications total 3 years of higher education study, you will not meet the qualification requirements to return to the Register. Please contact us on 8253 9700 for further information about this before allowing your registration to expire.
