Teacher Education Programs

This section contains information about approved Australian initial teacher education (ITE) programs and information for ITE providers for accreditation of Initial Teacher Education Programs. These programs have been approved by the Board as meeting the minimum prescribed qualification requirements for teacher registration.

Australian Programs

The Teachers Registration Board of South Australia accredits initial teacher education programs at the under-graduate and post-graduate level offered by Higher Education Institutions based in South Australia. Once the program is accredited it fulfils the teacher education qualification requirement for registration (accreditation in NSW) as a teacher Australia wide.

All States or Territories in Australia accredit the initial teacher education programs offered by Higher Education Institutions in their State or Territory.

If you enrol in an accredited initial teacher education program while the accreditation is ‘current’ ie. before the accreditation expiry date, then you will meet the qualification requirements for registration as a teacher even if you complete the program after its accreditation expires.

The link below will take you to the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) ‘Accredited programs list’. This is a comprehensive list of all currently accredited initial teacher education programs offered Australia wide. You can search for a program via State, Institution, type, stage or status.

Initial Teacher Education (ITE) Providers

The Board is empowered by Section 19A of the Teachers Registration and Standards Act, 2004 (the Act) to accredit initial teacher education programs. Pursuant to the Act and Regulation 5 of the Teachers Registration and Standards Regulations 2021 applications for accreditation must be made in accordance with the manner and form outlined in the Accreditation of initial teacher education programs in Australia – Standards and Procedures (AITSL 2020).

The Standards and Procedures can be found at Accreditation of initial teacher education programs in Australia: Standards and Procedures (AITSL 2020).

Providers intending to develop initial teacher education programs for accreditation are encouraged to contact the Boards Professional Standards Team before commencing the accreditation submission via professional.standards@trb.sa.edu.au or (08) 8253 9700.

Accreditation submissions must be lodged with the Board at least 8 months before providers intend to deliver the program.

The national accreditation system for ITE programs has three integrated elements:

  • the Standards and Procedures, which sets out a nationally consistent process to accredit programs, including the establishment and composition of accreditation panels, assessment of programs by these panels, reporting accreditation decisions, and mechanisms for achieving national consistency;
  • the Program Standards, which describe the characteristics of programs that give confidence the Graduate Teacher Standards will be achieved; and
  • the Graduate Teacher Standards, which are the Graduate career stage of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers, which make explicit the knowledge, skills and attributes expected of graduates of nationally accredited ITE programs.
