Preparing

The requirements for transitioning to (full) Registration are the same for teachers working as Temporary Relief Teacher’s (TRT’s) as they are for teachers with longer and more permanent teaching contracts.

Refer to the Maintaining Registration webpage to gain a thorough understanding of the requirements.

Finding an evaluator as a TRT

Teachers working as TRT’s are encouraged to build relationships with leadership and site personnel where they undertake teaching. Focus on a site where you provide most of your teaching service.

At small sites someone in a line management position might be a member of leadership, a principal or a director.

At larger sites someone in a line management position might be a person in a leadership role where they can gain familiarity with your practise. Your evaluator could be a faculty coordinator, a leader of a relevant curriculum area or age group with which you more commonly teach.

It is important to familiarise yourself with the policy of your preferred site, with regards to transitioning from Provisional to (full) Registration. It is important to identify early at the site, the role of the person with the authority to endorse the evaluator’s recommendation. Make it a priority to ensure the person responsible for endorsing your application is aware you are keen to complete the evaluation at the site and seek their support.

Gathering evidence as a TRT

Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) provides a detailed series of examples of documentary evidence which a TRT might use to guide their accumulation of evidence for the purpose of transitioning from Provisional Registration to (full) Registration.

For every standard and every descriptor there are several examples of evidence a temporary relief teacher can demonstrate from the AITSL Documentary Evidence Examples.

It is useful to consider using observational notes as evidence. When collecting evidence of your practice, ensure the appropriate permissions are sought and de-identify any evidence included in your presentation to your evaluator. This is particularly recommended if you are including evidence from multiple settings, to ensure the privacy and confidentiality for learners, schools, early childhood sites and other professionals. The examples of practice and suggested documentary evidence included in the guide are not definitive and should not be applied in a prescriptive way, used as a checklist or as fixed examples.

For the purposes of your evaluation, you can present evidence of your practice collected from your teaching service from a variety of sites.

You can maintain and develop your professional engagement as a TRT by connecting with experienced colleagues through local education networks such as SA Employing Authorities, Professional Associations, Higher Education Institutions, SA teacher unions and numerous other bodies.
