The Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST) were endorsed by the Ministers of Education (MCEECDYA) in 2010 and will be implemented by the Board in a number of ways.

The Australian Professional Standards for Teachers articulate what teachers are expected to know and be able to do across four career stages; graduate, proficient, accomplished and lead.

The Standards underpin the accreditation of initial teacher education programs for which the Board is responsible. The Standards at the graduate career stage are a component of Program Standard 1 of the Accreditation of initial teacher education programs in Australia - Standards and Procedures, which is the nationally consistent approach to accreditation endorsed by the Ministers for Education.

The Standards also underpin the process to apply to Transition from Provisional to (full) Registration. This process was formerly called Application for a Change of Registration Status. The application requires the teacher to have met all of the Standards at the proficient career stage.

Teachers wishing to renew (full) Registration or Provisional Registration will be required to undertake 60 hours of professional learning within their three-year term of registration referenced to the Standards at the proficient career stage as a minimum. The new requirements for renewal are being introduced according to a teacher’s registration cycle over the next three years.

On the 16^th of June 2022, the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers were published in the South Australian Government Gazette as being adopted under Schedule 31B(1) of the Teachers Registration and Standards Act 2004, to be observed by accredited teaching professionals, to take effect from 5 November 2021.
